AUTOBIOGRAPHY EXPRESSED

How does one get into the field of book publishing?

I really would like to be a book publisher. I’m moving to Boston next year and Boston University has a certificate program for book publishing. Will that be enough to get a job?

For publishers having experience in other areas makes a potential employee more of an asset. Valued skills in addition to editing would be marketing skills, knowing where and how a book will sell and the best way to get the item to the consumer, cross promotions, book signings, workshops for your authors, finding the audience and getting your writers name on their lips. Advertising – getting a book to the right market for less money, what covers will attract an audience, what blurbs will grab your potential buyers, ad placement. Accounting – again it’s all about the money. Distribution, Trend analysis… All of these things will ad to your usefulness in a company and industry where less people are doing more jobs across the board.

What is an interesting, comical, and easy auto/biography to read?

I have a summer reading assignment that requires that I read any autobiography or biography and I need some help thinking of one that will be interesting, funny is a big plus, and overall capturing or inspiring because I generally do not pick up books from this genre and I frankly need some help in choosing one. Please help?!

"Never Have Your Dog Stuffed" by Alan Alda. I normally don’t read celebrity memoirs, because most celebrities are completely full of themselves, but something just made me pick up this book. And wow, it was fantastic.

Before I read it, I just thought of Alan Alda as "the guy who played Hawkeye", but he’s so much more than that. He’s a brilliant writer; funny, clever, insightful, and extremely humble and down-to-earth. He talks about his frankly awful childhood and his rocky start as an actor with such good humor and optimism that you can’t help but admire him. I’d recommend this book to anyone. I’ve already done so to several of my friends, and not one of them hasn’t loved it.

Shelia Weller talks about Girls Like Us

2 Shelia Weller talks about Girls Like UsCarole King, Joni Mitchell, and Carly Simon remain among the most enduring and important women in popular music. Each woman is distinct. Carole King is the product of outer-borough, middle-class New York City; Joni Mitchell is a granddaughter of Canadian farmers; and Carly Simon is a child of the Manhattan intellectual upper crust. They collectively represent, in their lives and their songs, a great swath of American girls who came of age in the late 1960s. Their stories trace the arc of the now mythic sixties generation — female version — but in a bracingly specific and deeply recalled way, far from cliché. The history of the women of that generation has never been written — until now, through their resonant lives and emblematic songs. Filled with the voices of many dozens of these women’s intimates, who are speaking in these pages for the first time, this alternating biography reads like a novel — except it’s all true, and the heroines are famous and beloved. Sheila Weller captures the character of each woman and gives a balanced portrayal enriched by a wealth of new information.

What are the most successful book publishing companies?

What are the most successful book publishing companies?
I’m looking for information on the following – Please list…
The company.
What genre of books they publish.
What they are well known for/general reputation.
The size of the company.
And finally, which would be best to do a co-op work term at? And why?(As of today I am unsure what kind of job I would apply for – either editing, marketing or public relations)
Thanks in advance!

The ‘biggest’ companies are:
Simon & Schuster
Random House
Hachette
Macmillan
HarperCollins
Penguin

All of those houses publish…well, everything. It’s their subsidiaries that publish specific genres–for example, Tor Books is a subsidiary of Macmillan, and they publish science fiction/fantasy.
Macmillan is known for publishing more ‘literary’ books, while S&S and Random House are more ‘commercial.’
